As we all know, houseplants can also contribute to these feelings of home and comfort, and they can certainly enhance the farmhouse decor vibes in your home. Here are 7 houseplants for farmhouse decor that you will absolutely love!

First…what is Farmhouse Decor?

Farmhouse decor is the perfect marriage of cozy and wholesome, and practicality. It draws inspiration from older rural farmhouses or country homes that are very lived in, cozy, but also functional. A few particular staples of farmhouse decor include neutral colours, reclaimed barn wood, exposed wooden beams, rustic vintage furniture pieces, and wicker.

How Can Houseplants Enhance Farmhouse Decor?

If you are considering adding some houseplants to your farmhouse decor, you will want to stick to a few aesthetic choices to get the cozy rustic look that you desire. Plants with a softer, bushy texture are the way to go. They give the impression of bringing nature indoors. You can use these plants hanging on macrome, on a tabletop, hanging from shelves or on a plant stand on the floor.

As for houseplant pot choices, you can use ceramic or terra cotta to fit with the farmhouse decor aesthetic. Other great pot options include burlap cache pots, and wicker baskets. Both will really enhance that rustic farmhouse look. Here’s a little more on houseplant pots if you’d like to learn more.

1. Boston Fern

The textured green fronds of the Boston Fern are soft and delicate, making them one of the best houseplants for farmhouse decor. They can get very full and bushy under the right conditions, and will add a beautiful pop of green to compliment the neutral and earthy farmhouse style home. Boston ferns are medium to low light tolerant, prefer moderate to high humidity levels and moist soil. You can also swap this beauty out with a Lemon Button Fern or a Blue Star Fern.

2. Norfolk Island Pine

This is a gorgeous houseplant that fits in seamlessly with farmhouse decor. It is evergreen, woodsy, and rustic. You can purchase a Norfolk pine in a smaller size to suit a table top or you can get them as a large tree. These houseplants are quite easy to find around the holidays and can serve as a living Christmas tree that you care for as a houseplant. They enjoy bright, indirect light, medium to higher humidity levels, and prefer moist soil. On the whole, these pines are quite easy to care for. Their textured pine needles make them very a eye catching houseplant to add to your farmhouse decor.

3. Pothos

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is such a versatile houseplant to include in your decor. They can compliment a tropical jungle vibe but that’s not all. They make stunning houseplants for farmhouse decor as well! Here are a few that would be particularly suitable for the farmhouse decor aesthetic.

  • Pothos n’ joy – These have a similar appearance and variegation to English Ivy, but are significantly easier to care for!
  • Green Pothos – if you’re looking to add a classic pop of green to your farmhouse decor, the green pothos is both beautiful and understated. They are very easy to grow, and can also trail and become bushy.
  • Marble Queen Pothos – The variegation on the marble queen is almost like a painting! A very beautiful trailing plant.

All of these Pothos varieties are low light tolerant. Of course, plants with more variegation tend to need a little more light for photosynthesis, so be mindful of that. Pothos tend to also be on the forgiving side and they may droop when thirsty but will perk up again after watering. You can incorporate this houseplant in your farmhouse decor in a few ways. Set them on a wooden, floating shelf or on the top of a cabinet. You can also hang them with macrome hangers, allowing them to trail in all their glory.
