Calling all purple houseplant lovers! This one is for you. If you’d love to add a pop of vibrant purple colour to your houseplant collection this list has everything you need. From stunning purple blooms, to solid purple leaves, to some splashes of bright purple variegation, this is the ultimate guide to purple houseplants you are sure to love! These plants range from rare, to commonly found in North America, and can also range from easy care to a bit more complex. This list truly has something for every plant lover. Here’s the top 10 Purple Houseplants!
1. Tradescantia Purple Heart
This gorgeous (and furry!) houseplant is a great kickoff to our list of the ultimate purple houseplants for purple lovers! These trailing beauties are not very difficult to come by and will really add that pop of bright purple to your houseplant collection. Their care needs are relatively straightforward as well: they enjoy bright indirect light and evenly moist soil in order to thrive.
2. Peperomia Caperata Luna Red
Although the name says red, this rippled peperomia shimmers a dark purple colour! These peperomia are low light tolerant and grow in tiny, bushy patterns. This makes them a really great tabletop houseplant or a purple-y addition to your bookshelf! The only concern with peperomia care is that they have very thin, delicate roots so having a well-draining soil is very important and you need to be mindful not to overwater these plants as they can be susceptible to root rot. Here’s a full deep dive into peperomia care, if you’d like to learn more!
3. Black Pagoda Lipstick Plant
This plant has an absolutely stunning leaf pattern! Their leaves have a purple striped backing, almost zebra-patterned. Lipstick plants in general have very easy care requirements, and are incredibly rewarding houseplants to grow in your home. The patterned leaves on the black pagoda lipstick plant make them a little more ornate than the traditional green, with of course their striking purple undersides. These plants are medium light tolerant, hardy and very forgiving with their succulent-like leaves.
4. Alocasia Cuprea
Let’s throw a stunning plant for all of the rare plant lovers! The alocasia cuprea is one of the most beautiful and unusual purple houseplants out there! They look almost alien-like in their appearance, and make the perfect conversation starter, as they are most certainly eye-catching. Alocasia Cuprea tends to have more complicated care needs than the previous purple houseplants on this list. They prefer high humidity levels, bright indirect light, and a tentative watering schedule. But I assure you, they are well worth the effort!
5. Oxalis Triangularis
These are undeniably some beautiful purple houseplants! Oxalis are an absolute must if you are seeking out some solid purple colours throughout. These houseplants are nicknamed the “false shamrock” plants for their unique shape, but their bold aborigine colour is the main attraction. These are bulbous plants so they can go dormant occasionally. They enjoy bright indirect light, and light watering.
6. Hoya Sigilatis
If you are a hoya lover, there are quite a few interesting choices out there if purple leaves are what you covet. Albeit, you will most likely find just a pop of dark purple here and there. Many hoya leaves emerge in colours that range from very dark red, to dark green, and even purple. There are also some hoya varieties that will sun stress into a gorgeous reddish purple colour as well. If you want a more consistently splashy purple hoya, then the sigilatis is a great choice, as it usually holds its colouring consistently given the right conditions, even after the leaves have matured. Bright indirect light is all you need!
7. Rex Begonia
Rex begonia or “painted leaf begonia” are stunning purple houseplants to add to your collection. You can find rex begonias ranging from pink varieties, to red, to deep purples, and all of which are show stopping houseplants. These also prefer bright, indirect light and moist soil, and in return they will reward you with their stunning purple foliage.
8. African Violent
If it’s the purple blooms that you covet, look no further than the African Violet! These adorable, pet-friendly houseplants are a true classic, and for a well-deserved reason. They are repeated bloomers with uncomplicated care needs. They do, however, dislike having wet leaves, so they are a great candidate for bottom watering.
9. Calathea Roseopicta/ Calathea Medallion
One of the first purple houseplants that truly caught my eye was the mesmerizing calathea medallion. While many calatheas sport the stunning purple undersides to their leaves, these ones take the cake! The Roseopicta and Medallion varieties have very round large leaves that really show off that stunning purple bottom when they fold up at night. 10. String of Hearts (Green Variety)
If subtlety is more to your taste, and you’re looking for a more understated, lavender purple colour then the string of hearts may have everything you dream of! Their care needs are pretty straightforward. They love bright, indirect light and to allow their soil to fully dry out between waterings.
