Houseplants With Heart-Shaped Leaves Your Inner Romantic Will Love!

The best part about houseplants is that they come in just about all shapes and sizes, and there’s a plant that just about everyone will love! Leaf shape, structure, colours, sizes, there is a plant for every plant lover out there! Some of the most gorgeous houseplants out there have leaves that are in the shape of a heart. That’s right, many houseplants can have leaves in the perfect shape of a heart. For all those romantics and lovers of love out there, here are the top 10 houseplants with absolutely gorgeous heart-shaped leaves.

1. Heart-Leaf Philodendron

The name gives this one away! Plant lovers who not only love heart-shaped leaves but also love a cascading, trailing houseplant…meet your perfect match! Heart-Leaf Philodendrons are medium to even low light tolerant, easy to care for, and quite easy to find in most garden centres and plant shops. This is an absolutely beautiful houseplant, and a great alternative to the traditional pothos if you are a huge fan of heart-shaped leaves.

2. Philodendron Micans

If you love the heart-leaf philodendron, you will also love the gorgeous Philodendron Micans. With a very similar structure, the micans have gorgeous, dark, velvety soft leaves. They also have a striking reddish colour on the back of their leaves. Philodendron micans are also quite easy to care for as well and have become increasingly easy to care for as well and have become increasingly easier to find in North America in recent years. Philodendron micans are also very easy to propagate so you can share your heart-shaped leaves with friends and family!

3. Hoya Kerrii

Changing gears and moving from trailing philodendrons to an adorable and fun wax plant. Hoya Kerrii will often pop up and become widely available and advertised around Valentine’s Day simply because they have perfectly heart-shaped leaves! You can purchase these plants as a single-leaf cutting, or as a full-fledged houseplant. Hoya Kerrii prefers bright, indirect light (my hoyas love their spot near our western window!) and prefers to fully dry out between watering. If you are new to hoyas, great news! Hoya Kerrii is one of the easiest hoyas to grow.

Tip: If you happen to purchase a single-leaf cutting for a Hoya Kerrii, it is unlikely that it will grow into a full plant. If you are hoping to grow a nice big Hoya Kerrii, it’s best to start with a plant with a node or that has multiple leaves growing already. This isn’t to say there is anything wrong with single leaf Hoya Kerrii, as they are truly adorable little houseplants with heart-shaped leaves. This is just a small disclaimer to keep in mind, depending on what your goals are for this little hoya.

4. Peperomia Caperata

I love these houseplants! Peperomia Caperata are more delicate than the more succulent-like varieties, like the Obtusifolia for example. These adorable houseplants with heart-shaped leaves are well worth the marginally extra effort caring for them. The best part about the peperomia caperata is that they come in many different colours that are fun to collect: traditional green, luna red, frost, pink lady and so many more! They do require a bit more frequent watering than the more succulent-like peperomia plants. A great indicator for watering peperomia is what Nick Pileggi calls the “Taco Test”, where you squeeze the peperomia leaves. If the plant is not ready for more water, the leaves will not easily bend. If the leaves are softer, more flexible, and bend easily, then your peperomia is ready for a drink.

5. Monstera Deliciosa/ Monstera Borsigiana

If taller houseplants with heart-shaped leaves are your favourite, look no further than the beautiful monstera. Whether it’s the deliciosa (large form) or borsigiana (small form), monsteras will always have stunning heart-shaped leaves, particularly when the plant is in its juvenile stages. Monsteras are an absolute classic houseplant, and if more commercially rare houseplants are your style, you can opt for the monstera thai constellation or the beautiful variegated monstera. These houseplants have straightforward care and are continuously rewarding and will grow into absolutely magnificent houseplants.

6. Anthurium Clarinervium

This is a personal favourite of mine! This could possibly be one of my favourite houseplants of all time and ranks high on my list of favourite houseplants with heart-shaped leaves. Anthurium Clarinervium are a hardy anthurium that was formerly very uncommon to come across but have thankfully become much more available and also much more affordable as well. These velvety, suede heart-shaped leaves have the beautiful anthurium veining and just look stunning and other-worldly. This is definitely a perfect addition for lovers of houseplants with heart-shaped leaves that also love houseplants with jungle vibes! This plant will steal your heart and transform you to the tropics and you will love every minute of it.

7. Heart-Leaf Fern

When “heart-leaf” is in the name, you know this houseplant is going to deliver! This fern, unlike the name suggests, has the reputation of being one of the lower-maintenance houseplants compared to the rest of its genus. This is a very sweet little fern, with its heart-shaped leaves in a darker green colour that looks so classic. I find that they look especially stunning when combined with a neutral-coloured pot. Often solid green plants take a backseat to the more “exciting” and colourful variegated or pink houseplants, but this fern is highly underrated! This one is an absolute must if you are looking to add houseplants with heart-shaped leaves to your collection.

8. String of Hearts

Once again, the name says it all! The string of hearts is a trailing houseplant with tiny and adorable heart-shaped leaves that will take your breath away. The string of hearts, botanically named Ceropegia Woodii) have surprisingly succulent-like leaves and also benefit from the “taco test” from the peperomia caperata. The traditional string of hearts has gorgeous, tiny green textured leaves with a soft lavender purple backing. The variegated string of hearts, once rare but becoming easier to find, has stunning baby pink heart-shaped leaves mixed with a creamy white variegated. Lastly, the string of hearts silver glory has greenish-silvery leaves that shimmer. So if you love to collect as many houseplants with heart-shaped as possible, the string of hearts has three great options (Also you must check out Crazy Plant Guy’s massive string of hearts!)

9. Syngonium

Syngonium are a great choice for houseplants with heart-shaped leaves. They can range from common to rare varieties, come in many different varieties, and are quite hardy houseplants to grow in general. They even come in pink varieties for some added dreamy and romantic vibes! Syngonium do eventually mature into more arrow-shaped leaves, which gives them the common name “Arrowhead”. Do not despair. Many of these plants that you find in garden centres or shops will be juvenile. Therefore, they will have those coveted heart-shaped leaves. One thing to be mindful of when it comes to Syngonium is that they tend to be more pest-prone than other houseplant varieties. As long as you have good houseplant pest prevention measures in place, you can certainly grow happy and healthy heart-shaped leaf Syngonium.

10. Philodendron Gloriosum

Last but certainly not least! This philodendron is currently very high on my wish list. If you are looking for statement houseplants with heart-shaped leaves, look no further than the philodendron gloriosum! This plant has absolutely beautiful veining, beautiful structure and a great commercially rare houseplant (that I think is becoming a bit more available). This is an absolutely beautiful, striking houseplant that will enhance your plant collection.

Which of these houseplants with heart-shaped leaves are you excited to add to your collection this year?
